theMFK comes straight out of Persia for SCREWBOSS. The Flexican himself comes out on a Mink Carpet smokin a hookah. A very balanced individual indeed. The name of the game on SCREWBOSS is just that: balance.

SCREWBOSS is one of his more slowed down works, including more coherent vocals than we’re used to hearing in MFK’s work. Although he does include large amount of high-energy bursts, he weaves his tape together with large pounding bass, dragging down any hint of speed. So sure, he definitely uses some hints of the screw style in order to build a coherent piece, but the real “screw” that I hear is the twist between sounds, histories, and atmospheres that MFK harnesses.

Natural voices, warped voices, males, females, AKAs, drugs, cars, different languages, organs, chimes, claps, snares, varying pressures, scratches, lo-fi, flute samples, happy feelings of a new woman, the pleas of one in pain, wooden drums, wide-open spaces, tight-closed-flat atmospheres, MFK screws it all together. Don’t come here looking for a particular narrative, space, or sound. Come here for an adventurous mix of elements that span the range of styles and times of rap and sound in general.

In an era where anything goes in rap, you hear a lot of confused individuals. And in MFK’s case, you’ll encounter one who flips your confusion right back onto you. You don’t necessarily get how this all fits together, but that’s because you’re listening with your ears. Listen with your continuity. Your continuity of some traditions. Your continuity of the expanding definitions of music. Your continuity of experimentation. None of this is to say that MFK’s SCREWBOSS is too far outside the realm of reasonable sound. Simply put, he gathers a host of histories and sounds under one slowed-down roof, and is successful at constructing a collage without confusion.
